Personal Investment Research

Researching businesses, forming an investment thesis and reviewing decisions with evidence. Excel and Quinn’s Investment System support the workflow.

My research approach

Personal investment research gives me a reason to study businesses closely and form an independent view from evidence. I begin with the underlying company, then examine its financial performance, valuation and the economic conditions around it.

The process connects company research, portfolio monitoring and documented investment reasoning. Excel supports the organization and analysis of that information, while Quinn’s Investment System brings together portfolio visibility, research and decision records.

Understanding the business and its context

I review earnings and financial performance to understand how a business is performing, alongside its competitive positioning and the sector in which it operates. Following macroeconomic developments helps me put those company-level findings in the context of the broader economy.

These are connected parts of the research process: company results are more useful when considered alongside the business model, its competitors and the conditions affecting its market.

Valuation and the investment thesis

I consider valuation and growth metrics alongside historical valuation ranges. The comparison provides context for the investment thesis and the assumptions behind it, rather than a conclusion based on a single measure.

I document the reasoning behind an investment decision so I can return to it later. That record connects the company research, the valuation and my view of the opportunity, and gives me a basis for reassessing the decision as circumstances change.

Excel in my workflow

I maintain a separate Excel workflow for holdings, transactions, gains and losses, portfolio allocation and returns. It also supports dollar-cost averaging plans, investment guidelines and FRED/macroeconomic monitoring.

Excel gives me a structured place to organize the working information behind portfolio reviews and planning. My analytical work includes structured tables, PivotTables and PivotCharts, lookup functions, conditional formulas and portfolio dashboards. I use these capabilities to keep financial information organized and useful for review.

How Quinn’s Investment System supports the process

I created Quinn’s Investment System as a personal tool to bring more of my research and portfolio information into one place. Its read-only Questrade connection synchronizes holdings and transactions; it cannot place trades.

Portfolio views, owner-set allocation targets and a dollar-cost averaging calendar support planning. Analytics and risk views help me examine composition, concentration and exposure. Security Profiles, a Watchlist, a Thesis Tracker and a Decision Journal connect the underlying research with the reasons for my decisions.

Monitoring and revisiting decisions

I continue to follow the portfolio, company earnings and market developments after forming a thesis. When new information changes the reasoning, I revisit the original decision and the assumptions behind it.

This ongoing review is part of the interest I take in investing. The aim is to keep the decision process explicit and responsive to evidence. This is personal investment research, not professional portfolio management.
